Baseline HIV Stigma Index Survey for St. Kitts and Nevis

The stigma associated with AIDS is a setback for HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment. Persons living (PLWH), those that fear they might be HIV-infected, judgment discrimination from within their community, more especially health care services. Thus, this study seeks to establish baseline index of the level HIV in Saint Kitts Nevis (SKN), as well estimate among local providers (HCP). A total 88 participants volunteered study, consisting 43 PLWH 45 HCP. Data was collected by trained physicians, while HCP data via self-administered questionnaire. results reveal majority had experienced stigmatization due condition, either externally or internally, both. revealed deficiencies HIV-patient counseling possible breaches confidentiality regarding status disclosure. However, statistically showed an occupational bias concerning potential breaches, none skilled without permission. This differed semi-skilled unskilled participants. Amongst HCP, both passive active displays stigma, attributed mainly insufficient training. also HCP’s perception work environment terms safety negatively impacted interaction PLWH. underline need participation SKN Community Government, ensure quality life PLWH, could have boomeranging effect on society whole.
